Safe Sport Requirement

Mandatory USA Hockey SafeSport Training is for:

  • Coaches
  • Managers
  • Locker Room Attendants, chaperones, etc. (PARENT VOLUNTEERS)
  • Any player 17 years of age or older.

REQUIREMENTS FOR COACHES

All coaches will be required to complete the SafeSport Training.

REQUIREMENTS FOR OTHER VOLUNTEERS

Other volunteers in USA Hockey programs that have regular, routine or frequent access to or supervision over youth participants, such as team managers, locker room monitors, chaperones, etc. are required to complete the SafeSport Training and clear a background check prior to such access.

TRAINING IS VALID FOR ONE YEAR

The SafeSport Training is valid for one seasons. If a coach or volunteer previously took the training, a shorter “refresher” course is available.

 

WHEN TO COMPLETE THE TRAINING

The training is AVAILABLE NOW. The sooner the training is completed, the better. Coaches will not be placed on a roster until SafeSport training is complete. Locker room monitors must complete training prior to acting as monitors.

HOW TO COMPLETE THE REQUIRED TRAINING

Online Video Course - SafeSport training is AVAILABLE NOW as an online video program (approximately 90 minutes). See below for info from USA Hockey:

The SafeSport Training is available to take right now at no cost. The training was produced by the United States Olympic Committee and is comprised of short video segments that take approximately 90 minutes to complete, however, not all training needs to be completed in one session. You will need your USA Hockey Member Number, which can be obtained at www.usahockeyregistration.com (under Member Options, click on ‘Request Duplicate Registration Confirmation’). If you are not currently a USA Hockey Member, you can obtain a Member Number to take the training by registering with USA Hockey at no costin the Ice Managers/Volunteers category.

Also, please be sure to select the USA Hockey SafeSport course as there are multiple courses available. The website also has links if you have questions about the training or on registering for the training.

*Please note that not all volunteer roles require SafeSport training certification. SafeSport training is required for volunteers in USA Hockey programs that have regular, routine or frequent access to or supervision over youth participants, such as locker room monitors, chaperones, etc.

If you believe it is likely that you will be acting in such a capacity during the season, it is strongly recommended that you complete the training and providing verification early.

 

INFORMATION ABOUT USA HOCKEY SAFESPORT

The safety of its participants is of paramount importance to USA Hockey. USA Hockey SafeSport is the organization's program related to off-ice safety.

USA Hockey has long had systems in place to protect its participants from physical abuse, sexual abuse and other types of abuse and misconduct that can be harmful to youth hockey players and other participants. These include without limitation Physical Abuse, Sexual Abuse, Screening, Locker Room Supervision and Hazing Policies, in addition to Codes of Conduct applicable to administrators, coaches, officials, parents, players and spectators.

The USA Hockey SafeSport Handbook is intended to update and collect USA Hockey’s various policies to protect its participants from all types of misconduct and abuse.
