Coaching Resources

In 2011, the Coaching Education Program (CEP) has changed dramatically.  The requirements for Level 1, 2, and 3 are new and the previous requirements have been eliminated.  Here are a few highlights:

1)  Coaches will no longer be required to have attained a certain CEP level to coach a corresponding level of hockey.  First year coaches must have at least a Level 1, Second year coaches must have at least a level 2, and third year coaches must have a level 3 regardless of the level they are coaching.  This means new coaches will no longer be required to take more than one CEP class in a given season.  In fact, the will not be allowed to take more than one.  Certifications received last year were only valid for that season at level 1 and 2.  Level 3 is good for 2 years.

2)  Level 3 may now re certify on-line 2 times, for a total of 6 years.  After that the coach is required to move to level 4.

3)  Every coach regardless of the level they presently hold (levels 1-5) is required to complete an age specific on-line module.  These age specific modules are good for as long as this program is in place.  These are approx 5 hours each, and can be saved for 30 days so they don't need to be completed in one sitting.  For example, regardless of a coaches current level, if they are going to coach Bantams, they will need to take the Bantam on-line module.  If they are a first year coach they would also be required to take level 1, second year level 2, 3rd year level 3.  If they want to coach Bantam and Mite, they must take both.  These age-specific modules will be available at www.usahockey.com beginning September 1st.

4)  Level 1, 2, and 3 CEP classes now have a set price of $40.00.  The on-line modules are $10.00 each.

All youth hockey coaches in Minnesota and the rest of the country are required to attend a series of clinics before they are eligible to coach. USA hockey refers to it as CEP (Coaching Education Program) The clinics are designed to help coaches provide curriculum and use the proper teaching techniques to insure the proper development of their players. See web site for frequently asked questions. http://www.minnesotahockey.org/coaches/cep.asp If you need a clinic to get certified, email Mike Kelley at hockey.operations@eastviewhockey.net. Our District 8 contact will give clinics locally.

Paved rink – Apple Valley Parks and Recreation has rink next to the Teen Center that is paved and works good for street hockey, stickhandling, and shooting. Good location for your team to do dry land training. They do not take reservations, but it is not used much.
